The Government of Maldives expresses its appreciation to the Government of the United States of America for its assistance in the ongoing search and rescue operation following the tragic incident involving the FRIEND-4 vessel.
Three Maldivian nationals remain missing following the incident - Captain of the vessel, an official from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and an official of the Maldives Police Service (MPS). The Government extends its deepest sympathies to their families and loved ones as they endure this difficult time.
Since the incident, the relevant authorities of Maldives has been closely coordinating the search and rescue operation. Given the challenging nature of the search, the Government also sought specialized assistance from bilateral partners.
In response to the Government's request, the United States extended support to the FRIEND-4 search operation. This assistance complements the ongoing efforts of the MNDF, Maldives Police Service, and other relevant Maldivian authorities involved in the operation. The United States aircraft conducted an extensive search operation in coordination with the MNDF this afternoon. Despite extensive search efforts, the P-8 aircraft was unfortunately unable to locate any evidence associated with the missing personnel.
The Government of Maldives deeply appreciates the timely support and cooperation extended by the Government of the United States during this challenging time. This assistance reflects the close and longstanding partnership between the Maldives and the United States, particularly in the areas of maritime safety, security, and emergency response.
The Government remains committed to providing all necessary support to the ongoing search and rescue efforts and will continue to coordinate closely with all relevant authorities and bilateral partners in the hope of bringing comfort and consolation to the affected families.
