The Government of Maldives and the Government of Japan has signed the Exchange of Notes to provide a grant aid of 152 million Japanese Yen (1,020,134 US Dollars) to the Maldives for the continuation of scholarships opportunities to be offered by Japan for the upcoming fiscal year, under the Japanese Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Sheryna Abdul Samad and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Her Excellency Ishigami Rumiko signed the Exchange of Notes today at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since its commencement in 2020, the JDS project by the Japanese Government has provided scholarship opportunities for Maldivians to pursue master’s degree programmes at world-class academic institutions in Japan. The purpose of this project is to strengthen human resource capacity by equipping young Maldivians with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the Maldives’ long-term socioeconomic development.
As of today, 17 students have graduated from this programme, and 9 students are already in Japan undertaking their studies.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, Civil Service Commission, the Embassy of Japan, and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
