The Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Republic of Seychelles Barry Faure, today.
During the meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Iruthisham welcomed Foreign Minister of Seychelles Barry Faure to the Maldives. They reflected on the close and cordial relations between the two countries, as neighbours in the Indian Ocean, founded on mutual respect and the shared challenges and aspirations of small island nations.
The two Ministers further reaffirmed the close and friendly relations between the Maldives and Seychelles and discussed avenues to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including tourism, trade and investment, climate change, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Ministers also exchanged views on enhancing cooperation between the two countries as fellow Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including closer coordination at regional and multilateral fora such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth, AOSIS, and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS).
Foreign Minister Iruthisham welcomed the visit as a historic milestone in Maldives–Seychelles relations, noting that this marks the first official visit to the Maldives by a Foreign Minister of Seychelles and the first high-level bilateral engagement between the two countries following the formation of the new administration in Seychelles.
Both Ministers expressed confidence that the visit would contribute to further deepening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Seychelles and reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing collaboration for the mutual benefit of the peoples of both countries.
Foreign Minister Iruthisham was accompanied to the meeting by Foreign Secretary Fathimath Inaya, Secretary Dr. Hala Hameed, Secretary Ahmed Shiaan, Additional Secretary Khadeeja Najeeha, and Assistant Director Mohamed Shujau.
