Non – Resident Ambassador of the Maldives to Cuba presents Credentials to the President of Cuba

The newly appointed Non-Resident Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Republic of Cuba, Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, presented his Letters of Credence to the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez. The ceremony took place at the Palacio de la Revolución – Office of the President.

During the brief meeting that followed, Ambassador Ghafoor conveyed warm greetings and good wishes from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as well as from the Government and the people of Maldives to President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the Government, and the people of Cuba. He also reflected on the longstanding partnership between the two countries and expressed interest in further enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez also appreciated the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the multilateral sphere.

Ambassador Ghafoor also attended the floral tribute ceremony at the José Martí Monument in the Plaza de la Revolución, held in honour of the National Hero of the Republic of Cuba.

During the visit, Ambassador Ghafoor also met with Maldivian students currently pursuing medical studies in Havana.

The Maldives and Cuba established diplomatic relations on 19 January 1977. Over the years, cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the field of medicine, has remained notable, including the deployment of medical professionals and the provision of scholarships for Maldivian students pursuing medical studies in Cuba. 

Ambassador Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed also serves as the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United States and Non-Resident High Commissioner to Canada.
